film bugDissolve to One...Open Mike...Cue Talent...This is just part of the hands-on B.A. degree in Broadcasting & Electronic Media at Eastern Kentucky University. This major prepares students for careers in new media areas which combine digital audio, digital video and digital graphics for the internet, as well as traditional careers in news, sports and entertainment programming.

The major in Broadcasting & Electronic Media has three options to provide students with flexibility in their career choice. Students may have an option in Broadcast News (21 hours) which prepares students for a career in Broadcast Journalism. Or students may have an option in Broadcasting General (22 hours). This option provides students with more flexibility and allows for career choices in production, sales, and management. Finally, students may study Film Techniques and Technology (21 hours) to gain a competitive video production background and a technical knowledge of many aspects of the filmmaking process and the entertainment industry. Students gather screenwriting skills, critical viewing and thinking abilities and a wide knowledge of film history.

Careers in Broadcasting & Electronic Media
Graduates with a Broadcasting and Electronic Media degree are employed at radio and television stations, cable companies, networks, video production companies, corporations, government, and direct programming systems. These graduates pursue careers as anchors, audio producers, camera operators, directors, general managers, news directors, news reporters, producers, radio and TV talent, sales managers, sports reporters, video editors, videographers, video production assistants, writers, and salespersons. As broadcasting, cable TV, video production companies, corporate communications industries, as well as web sites with audio and video playback features expand, the need for qualified writers, producers, and sales people increase.

Philosophy
Students majoring in Broadcasting and Electronic Media (BEM) receive group as well as individual instruction from faculty who have worked as professionals in the media. They are taught to be responsible media professionals and are prepared to adjust to the changing electronic media environment of the 21st century. Courses in BEM emphasize hands-on learning, and students are expected to produce portfolio quality material in each class.
