The Department of Communication offers courses that emphasize hands-on learning as well as models of instruction that teach students not only how to be successful media professionals, but also how to recognize and adjust to the changing media environment of the 21st century.
Faculty within the Department of Communication have (on average) more than 10 years of professional experience and 16 years of teaching experience.

The latest issue of COMments, the Department of Communication newsletter, has been distributed and is available online. BTS 300:
- One-day-only career-related event called "Communication NOW"
- Required of all Junior Communication students
- To be taken fall of Junior year
- Attire: Please dress professionally as potential employers will be there.
- What to bring: Bring current copies of your resume and/or tapes.
NOTE: Please register for BTS 300 section with Dr. Maureen Everett - CRN # 14617 - 0 credit hours
Do NOT sign up for any other BTS 300 section. - It must be this particular section!
Registration for this section is open through mid-semester if you still need it.
BTS 400:
- Prerequisite is BTS 300
- Professional Skills Conference - One-day-only event required of all Senior Communication students
- To be taken spring of Senior year

Ashley Hutchinson named 2009 Enterprise Rent A Car Outstanding Summer Intern
Senior Ashley Hutchinson, a CMS major from Ashland, has been named by Enterprise Rent A Car as Outstanding Summer Intern for 2009. She competed with others throughout the Enterprise region, which also includes Lexington, Frankfort, Georgetown, Louisville, Hopkinsville and southern Indiana.
This is the second consecutive year that an EKU intern captured the top prize. The award is based on a point system that considers sales, referrals and customer satisfaction surveys. Hutchinson received the highest-ever point total for the regional intern award.
EKU at the Movies!
Jason Epperson, the 2008 Department of Communication Outstanding Alumni, is shooting a movie in Lexington, Kentucky this summer. Learn more at www.kentucky.com/167/story/866531.html.
Chad Cogdill and John Fitch, Broadcasting and Film faculty members, along with Emerson St. John, Communication Department Technical Supervisor, are also shooting a movie in Richmond and Lexington this summer. Jennifer Fairchild Nominated for Golden Apple Award
CMS professor Jennifer Fairchild was recently nominated for the 2008-2009 University Housing Golden Apple Award. The Golden Apple Awards are given to faculty members who are nominated by University Housing students for their excellence in the classroom and in their one-on-one interactions with students. One nominee from each college is selected based on the nominations provided to University Housing.
Emerson St. John Named Kentucky Colonel
Department Media and Technical Supervisor Emerson St. John recently was awarded a commission as a Kentucky Colonel for his work and service with Pioneer Playhouse in Danville.
EKU Progress Racks Up Awards!
The EKU Progress recently was awarded Third Place in the Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper category at the Society for Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards for Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky (Region 5).
In addition, the following people won individual awards at the Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association conference:

- Courtney Tennill -- First Place, General Interest Column Writing
- Ben Kleppinger -- Third Place, Best Infographic
- Courtney Daniel and Maria Fitzgerald -- Third Place, Best Feature Page Layout
Other News
Communication professors Chad Cogdill and John Fitch III won the Best Short Film Award for the 2008 Cinefest Movie Expo and Festival for “The Library”, a short film produced at EKU in the summer of 2008 with a student crew. Cogdill and Fitch teach Film Techniques and Technology in the Broadcasting and Electronic Media major. The film is about a young man who lets his dreams come alive in a college library. It was shot entirely on the EKU campus, and provided internship opportunities for six BEM students. Watch the movie here: lo-rez hi-rez
Liz Hansen Named EKU Foundation Professor
Congratulations to Dr. Liz Hansen who was named Foundation Professor - effective for 2008-2010. The Foundation Professor award recognizes the individual for his/her excellence in the classroom and dedication to students and other faculty as well.
